If you get the chance, one must hike Skyline trial. Not a tough hike and you get to see what I would call one of the best views I have ever seen. Last time on the trail we saw a Bull Moose but no luck this time. This hike is still worth the trip!

Shooting the South Tufa and Milky Way at Mono Lake, California http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/7/midnight-at-mono-lake-the-south-tuffa-and-milky-way Greetings Everyone,

The Milky Way was out in full force at Mono Lake last week. The hardest thing for me was staying up that late..lol. Mono Lake is known for it's Tufa. Tufa is essentially common limestone. What is uncommon about this limestone is the way it forms. Typically, underwater springs rich in calcium (the stuff in your bones) mix with lakewater rich in carbonates (the stuff in baking soda). As the calcium comes in contact with carbonates in the lake, a chemical reaction occurs resulting in calcium carbonate--limestone. The calcium carbonate precipitates (settles out of solution as a solid) around the spring, and over the course of decades to centuries, a tufa tower will grow. Tufa towers grow exclusively underwater, and some grow to heights of over 30 feet. The reason visitors see so much tufa around Mono Lake today is because the lake level fell dramatically after water diversions began in 1941. I know all this stuff because I looked it up on the internet!!:-) Take a good flash light so you can paint the Tufa during the long exposure and you won't stumble over some other photographer that is shooting in the dark! I think an exposure of about 20 sec and f4 is a good start. Don't forget to use manual focus at infinity.

Milky Way and Tuffa, Mono Lake CaliforniaMilky Way and Tuffa, Mono Lake CaliforniaThis shot was taken about 11:30. It was 30 sec which I feel was a little bit too much. Shot it with a Sony AR7 and the stock 28-70 lens.

Greek Islands http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/5/greek-islands I just got back for Greece. It was a great trip. I have the opportunity to visit Athens and three Greek Islands. The beauty of Santorini is not done justice by photos. Believe me I tried!! I shot my new Sony Ar7 and even took my P2 Drone with me. I hope to get back there someday. Here are a couple of images I captured...Please check out the complete Gallery if you get a chance.

Eureka Dunes, Death Valley http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2015/3/eureka-dunes-death-valley On a recent trip to Death Valley national Park we drove about 1000 miles from Lone Pine to Eureaka Dunes. The last 10 miles over a bummmmmpy  washboard road. The hike  up the dunes was tough to this view point. This was taken as the sun was setting and the light didn't last too long. I was happy I came away with this BW image for my effort. The ride back to Lone Pine was LONG!

Saguraros of Cave Creek AZ http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/12/scottsdale-areial-photo I'm learning to fly my Phantom2 and getting a little braver as I took him out over the Saguaro Cactus at Cave Creek AZ. I only got one flight at Cave Creek due to the fact a couple of park security guys told me it was not allowed in the park. They were great about letting me know the rules. So we packed it in. I did get about 7 min. movie which needs editing. Here's an image I took with the GoPro as it was above the Saguaros. Summit of Brown Mt. AZSummit of Brown Mt. AZSelfie Summit Brown Mt. Summit of Brown Mountain with my Phantom 2 http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/12/summit-of-brown-mountain-with-my-phantom-2 Hi All,
We are in Scottsdale for the week. Today we took My Phantom 2 ( His name is Astro) out for a little easy hike. Well, l it was easy until the last .3 miles to the Summit of Brown Mt. After a little huffing and puffing we made it to the summit. We started the hike at about 2700 ft. and summit at about 3200 ft. That ended up being about 500 ft. in 1.7 miles. At the summit it was a little windy.  I really was not sure if I should fly Astro or not, but I thought what the hell. I only in took him up about 20-30 feet. I must admit I didn’t move him all over. I kept him close. LOL, not that it mattered, because if he crashed, it would have been adios Astro! It was good experience and we got a few shots. I hope to do more flights this week and improve my pilot skills. Here are a few of the shots we took on the summit.

California gets some well needed rain! http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/12/california-gets-some-well-needed-rain I shot this imaged last year on Vancouver Island in a storm watching town called Tofino. It is a place where people gather to watch the storms come into the Pacific Northwest. With all the rain we got in California the last few days, I'm sure there was a run on rain gear at the Stores.

Monarch Butterflies of California's Central Coast http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/monarch-butterflies-of-californias-central-coast When I took the trip to Pismo Beach California to shoot the Monarch Butterflies I thought it would be a simple task. I didn't think light would be a problem. The issue was too MUCH light. It never occurred to me that in the morning when the light was excellent and defused the butterflies we inactive and appeared as dull leaf like clumps in the trees. The Monarchs did not become active until sunlight was on them. This meant dealing with direct sunlight. Also, the bigger the lens the better. This helps blurring the background and makes it easier to capture the Monarchs that are high up in the trees. It was an amazing sight to see and was a great trip. If your ever in the Pismo Beach area in winter, you can find the Monarchs at the Central Coast Reserve. This is located just north of Grand Ave. in the Tri-City area.

Southern Caribbean in December http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/southern-caribbean-in-december Last December we embarked on a cruise in the Southern Caribbean. The colors of the islands and the color of the water is what makes the long flight worthwhile. We took 10 days, 7 aboard the Windstar. It was during the rainy season but there was still a lot of sun and the clouds provided for a more interesting sky. Barbados was where we caught the ship and we traveled to St. Lucia, Grenada, Tabago and the small island of Bequia. Color is what makes the photography so much fun in the Caribbean. I can't wait to get back there. Have a look at more images in my Southern Caribbean Gallery.

Fall In California http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/fall-in-california As Fall Winter and Spring has come and gone I would like to get blogging again and bring this so called "Blogger's" up to date. We do have fall in California. During October I took a road trip to Quincy via Highway 395 through Bishop and June Lake. It really was a colorful trip. Our timing was perfect and one of the regular photographers I met on the road said "these were the best fall conditions he had ever seen". These are a few pics from the trip. I will get going and try to recapture all the fans out there in my blog land. :-/

Summer is just Heating Up! http://chasinglightphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/9/summer-is-just-heating-up Well this summer has come and is almost gone in name only. We have been heating up here is So Cal. They say we now have weather like St. Louis or Nawleans! Anyway you say it...It IS HOT! I have been sitting around this Labor Day Weekend staying out of the heat and actually working on my Site. I gave it a complete new look and overhaul. It is still a work in progress and I am trying to add some SEO features to the site to get more looks with search engines. I have also been working on some images from Sedona AZ. The sights of Sedona never get old to me. It was a pleasure to spend the week and get to know the area much better than I had in the past. if you get a chance check out my new Sedona Gallery...I'm adding images now.

Hope all is well with all you out there in Cyberland,

Tom

Since my last blog I have been to French Polynesia, Yosemite, and 28 days in Spain. I am still hooked to my camera and shooting all the time. My Getty Images are still selling for some pocket change and I had a big sale from ImageBrief, which helped me buy this laptop I am using to write this post. I will be heading to Tucson and Sedona this summer for some golf and Photo opportunities. We will be in Seattle in early fall for the 3Day and end up in the Caribbean to end up the year. Traveling to Spain last February was a fantastic trip. It was cold and wet and we even got snow in Segovia just north of Madrid. That didn't slow us down nor did it stop me from shooting 4000 plus images. Here are a couple shots from Spain. I hope to get back there again someday!Segovia Cathedral This is the Cathedral de Segovia....Just before the snow began to fall.Mejas Spain The above shot was taken in Mejias, one of the White Hill Towns in Southern Spain.
